Louis JadotFounded in 1859, Louis Jadot now produces wines from over 150 appellations and is our favourite negociant. Theirs is a first-class list of classic Burgundies, united for over thirty years by the passionate care of inspired winemaker Jacques Lardiere. Jadot's philosophy is the perfect expression of terroir, as opposed to the house style approach of other negociants, and therefore of minimal intervention in both the vineyard and the winery.
Louis Jadot Pouilly Vinzelles, Chateau de Loché 2005
Pouilly Vinzelles is a tiny satellite of Pouilly Fuissé in the Maconnais (southern part of Burgundy) and represents far better value in my opinion. Louis Jadot manage the Chateau de Loché and it is the star property of the appellation. In its youth, this wine was racy and spicy, but it improves remarkably with age. With almost five years' bottle age, this will go a further 2 or 3 years, but is now developing superb complex aromas, with lovely fleshy ripe fruit and honeyed, creamy nutty oak characters on the palate. Serve with fish and white meats in creamy sauces.
Louis Jadot Fleurie Domaine de Poncereau 2007
The wines of Fleurie are renowned for their singular freshness of flavour and complex, fruity floral aromas, which makes them the most memorable, popular (and expensive!) Beaujolais Cru. Made with 100% Gamay, Domaine de Poncereau have vineyards on south and west facing slopes, with the best granitic soil for Gamay. With 10 months in oak and some time in bottle, this now has a silky texture, lovely finesse and the fresh, red fruit characters are becoming softer and riper. A surprisingly good match now for red meats and even goat's cheese.
Louis Jadot Beaune 1e Cru 2002Jadot blends together the powerful, tannic and deeply coloured wines of the central and southern part of Beaune, with the softer, fruitier wines of the northern part, to make a wine made entirely from their smaller Premier Cru vineyards, and from a very good vintage. Following as long and natural a fermentation as possible, the wine is aged for 18 months in barrel, to give it the structure to age up to 15 years from vintage. Just starting to drink now, although elegant, this has good body for a Beaune, with textbook red fruit aromas and spicy vanilla, and will accompany fine and delicate meat dishes, and is fabulous with cheese.
